Description
Limited edition gold proof 2022 memorial Sovereign from The Royal Mint: the first to feature a portrait of King Charles III. Proof Sovereigns are finished to a much higher standard than their bullion counterparts. Intended for collectors, they’re struck multiple times with hand-prepared dies for a superior, high-contrast, high-definition appearance. For the last seven decades, proof Sovereigns have featured a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. Her Majesty’s passing in September 2022 means that these sought-after UK collector’s coins will be among the first to utilise Martin Jennings’ official portrait of Charles, which shows His Majesty facing left, the opposite direction to his mother. The reverse captures this moment of transition with a special royal arms design: similar in theme to Timothy Noad’s Platinum Jubilee motif but stylistically distinct, embodying this new reign. It’s the work of Jody Clark – known for his portrait of Elizabeth – and it’s rich in detail, featuring a realistic lion and unicorn as supporters on either side of a shield of royal arms with a crowned helmet above. Every spare millimetre of this intricate design is filled with flourishes and national flower emblems. Please note that this listing includes the coin only and does not come with the original Royal Mint presentation box.
The 2022 memorial sovereigns are the first of these gold coins to feature a portrait of King Charles III. The 2022 memorial sovereign has a gold purity of 91.67% and has a gross weight of 7.98 grams.
