Description
The 20-franc Cérès was produced for only three years, from 1849 to 1851. This coin was introduced under the Second French Republic, which came into being after the abdication of King Louis-Philippe I in favour of his grandson. Unlike most other French coins of this era, the gold coins of the Second Republic do not feature the portrait of a ruler but rather the mythical figure of Cérès. These coins are sought after by collectors due to their historical significance and the unique Ceres design.
The French 20 Francs Ceres gold coin has a gold purity of 90% and a weight of 6.45 grams. The obverse features the Head of Ceres right crowned with ears of corn between a lictor bundle surmounted by a hand of Justice, all under a six-pointed star; signed L.MERLEY. F. With the reverse features within a crown formed by a laurel branch on the left and an oak branch on the right.
