The design was created by Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark, who is responsible for all the coins in the Queen’s Beasts series. The 2017 Griffin of Edward III gold coin has a weight of 7.78 grams and a purity of 24-carat gold (99.99% pure). The reverse side features an image of a griffin—depicted with the body of a lion and the wings and head of an eagle—over a shield representing the House of Windsor, with a legend surrounding it as well.
