The Krugerrand is a South African coin that was first minted on 3rd July 1967. The south African mint originally released the Krugerrand as the country’s money. The Krugerrand is a 22ct gold coin and weighs 33.93g which makes it 1 troy ounce of pure gold as well as a copper alloy as the remaining weight. It is one of the most actively traded gold bullion coins across the world. By the 1970s/80s the Krugerrand made up 90% of the international coin market. The name Krugerrand comes from the name of the president at the time, Paul Kruger and the currency of South Africa, ‘Rand’.
