Description
The Sovereign coin has remained a symbol of consistency through changing times. It features a flattering portrait of a young Queen Elizabeth II, created by artist Arnold Machin, alongside Benedetto Pistrucci’s renowned engraving of Saint George and the Dragon. This 1980 edition is one of 91,200 coins minted, with a total weight of 7.98 grams and made of 22-carat gold (91.67% pure gold).
On the obverse side of the coin, you will find the second crowned portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right and wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, with text surrounding the image. The reverse side depicts St. George on horseback, slaying the dragon, along with the date and the engraver’s initials at the bottom.
