Description
The 2020 White Lion of Mortimer 2oz Silver Coin is the eighth release in the Royal Mint’s acclaimed Queen’s Beasts series. This series celebrates the heraldic creatures that stood guard at Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation in 1953. The White Lion of Mortimer represents the Queen’s Yorkist heritage and was first used by Roger Mortimer, a founder Knight of the Order of the Garter. His White Lion passed to the House of York and was used by both Richard II and Edward IV.
The White Lion of Mortimer is depicted in a seated position, with its tail tucked away, symbolising loyalty and discipline—qualities important to the monarchs that have gone before Her Majesty The Queen. The lion holds a shield bearing the white rose of York combined with a sunburst motif, a symbol associated with Edward IV, who saw the sun as a sign of good luck in battle. The design was created by Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark, who also designed the definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the coin’s obverse.
This is a 2-oz coin made from 999.9 silver. It has a face value of £5 and is exempt from Capital Gains Tax
