The 1997 proof Britannia 4-coin set is a fascinating addition to any collection, reflecting both the historical continuity and the modern evolution of British coinage. The 1997 Britannia set was released to mark the 10th anniversary of the first Gold Britannia coin in a 4 coin set. As such, they feature a special new design for that year by the original designer of the Gold Britannia, Philip Nathan. Struck by The Royal Mint, this coin is composed of 22-carat gold, this coin set contains a 1oz gold Britannia, a 1/2oz gold Britannia coin, a 1/4oz Britannia coin and a 1/10oz gold Britannia coin. The 1997 Britannia 4-coin set has a limited mintage of 1,500, although only 892 were ever sold.
The obverse of these coins features the third crowned portrait of Queen Elizabeth II right, wearing the George IV State Diadem, legend around. Whilst the reverse features the standing figure of Britannia in horse drawn chariot, legend around.
What distinguishes this edition is its proof finish, which is achieved through multiple strikes with hand-prepared dies. Proof coins exhibit an attractive high-contrast appearance and are minted in smaller quantities compared to their bullion counterparts.
