Description
The 1998 proof sovereign 3 coin set marks the start the fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on sovereigns which was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. Because there we no bullion sovereigns struck in this year. Proof sovereigns are the only way to obtain sovereigns from this year. This sovereign coin set contains a proof double sovereign, a proof full sovereign and a proof half sovereign. These sovereigns are struck in 22 carat gold and have a combined coin weight of 27.93 grams. This sovereign set has a very limited mintage of 2,000.
The obverse features the fourth crowned portrait of Queen Elizabeth II right, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, legend around. Whilst the reverse features St. George on horseback slaying the dragon right, date and designer’s initials in exergue.
What distinguishes this edition is its proof finish, which is achieved through multiple strikes with hand-prepared dies. Proof coins exhibit an attractive high-contrast appearance and are minted in smaller quantities compared to their bullion counterparts.
