The 1987 proof 1/10oz Britannia gold coin is a fascinating addition to any collection, reflecting both the historical continuity and the modern evolution of British coinage. This was the first year that the Britannia’s were introduced. Between 1987-1989, these 1/10oz Britannia gold coins we’re alloyed with copper. From 1990 onwards, they we’re alloyed with silver. Struck by The Royal Mint, this coin is composed of 22-carat gold and weighs 3.41g. The 1987 1/10oz Britannia has a limited mintage of 3,500.
The obverse features the third crowned portrait of Queen Elizabeth II right, wearing the George IV State Diadem, legend around. The reverse features the standing figure of Britannia, holding trident in right hand, olive branch and shield bearing the Union flag in her left, legend around.
What distinguishes this edition is its proof finish, which is achieved through multiple strikes with hand-prepared dies. Proof coins exhibit an attractive high-contrast appearance and are minted in smaller quantities compared to their bullion counterparts.
