Struck by The Royal Mint, this coin is composed of 22-carat gold, conforming to the traditional purity standard for sovereign coins, and it weighs 3.99 grams. The obverse of the 1999 half Sovereign features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, created by Ian Rank-Broadley. This portrait, introduced in 1999, is noted for its realism and meticulous detail, capturing the Queen’s regal bearing. Encircling the portrait is the inscription “ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REGINA FID DEF,” translating to “Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith.” and has been in use for decades after.
On the reverse, the coin proudly bears the classic design of Saint George slaying the dragon, an enduring symbol of bravery and victory, masterfully crafted by Benedetto Pistrucci. This iconic image has been a staple of sovereign coins since its first introduction in the early 19th century, symbolising the triumph of good over evil.
What distinguishes this edition is its proof finish, which is achieved through multiple strikes with hand-prepared dies. Proof coins exhibit an attractive high-contrast appearance and are minted in smaller quantities compared to their bullion counterparts.
