Description
The Sovereign coin has remained a symbol of consistency through changing times. It features a flattering portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, created by artist Arnold Machin, alongside Benedetto Pistrucci’s renowned engraving of Saint George and the Dragon. This 2003 edition is one of 15,000 coins minted, with a total weight of 7.98 grams and made of 22-carat gold (91.67% pure gold).
On the obverse side of the coin, you will find the fourth crowned portrait of Queen Elizabeth II right, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, with a legend around. The reverse bears St. George on horseback slaying the dragon right, with the date and designer’s initials in exergue.
What distinguishes this edition is its proof finish, which is achieved through multiple strikes with hand-prepared dies. Proof coins exhibit an attractive high-contrast appearance and are minted in smaller quantities compared to their bullion counterparts.
