Description
The 1787 Spanish 4 Escudos gold coin is a historical gold coin minted during the reign of King Charles III (Carlos III) of Spain. Often referred to in historical contexts as a “double doubloon,” it is highly valued by numismatists for both its gold content and colonial-era history. This coin was struck from 87.5% pure gold and weighs 13.54 grams.
The obverse features the armoured bust of King Charles III facing right, surrounded by the Latin legend CAROL. III. D. G. HISP. ET IND. R. (Charles III, by the Grace of God, King of Spain and the Indies) and the date. Whilst the reverse features the crowned royal coat of arms of Spain, encircled by the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece, flanked by the value indicator (4 S). It bears the motto IN UTROQ FELIX AUSPICE DEO (Happy in both worlds, under the gaze of God).
